Keeping Safe During Darker Mornings and Evenings

As the autumn and winter months arrive, visibility on the roads reduces and conditions become more challenging during peak travel times. To ensure all our students remain safe and confident on their journeys to and from school, we are sharing key guidance on personal safety and road awareness.
We encourage all parents and carers to take a few moments to review these practical tips with their children.
1. Plan Your Route & Stay Connected
-
Agree on a Safe Route: Discuss and agree on a clear route to and from school, including a backup plan in case of unexpected delays.
-
Keep People Updated: Let family or friends know your travel plans and expected arrival times.
-
Charge Phones Before Leaving: Ensure mobile phones are fully charged before leaving home for emergency use.
-
Keep Details Private: A quick reminder that students should never share live locations, daily routines, or personal information on public social media accounts.
2. Stay Visible & Stay Alert
-
Be Bright, Be Seen: Wear reflective accessories on coats or bags, or choose bright clothing to help drivers see you in low light.
-
Stick to Well-Lit Areas: Always stick to main roads and well-lit paths. Avoid shortcuts through unlit parks, alleyways, or isolated areas after dark.
-
Ditch the Distractions: Keep phones in pockets and remove headphones while walking or crossing roads. Paying full attention to your surroundings is your best defence.
-
Use Safe Crossings: Always use designated zebra or pelican crossings, or cross near well-lit road junctions.
3. Travel Smart & Trust Your Instincts
-
Travel Together: Whenever possible, walk to and from school with friends or in groups.
-
Have Keys Ready: Have your keys easily accessible in your bag or pocket before reaching your destination.
-
Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn't feel right, remove yourself from the situation straight away. Move towards a safe, well-lit place where other people are around—such as a shop or public venue—and contact a trusted adult immediately.
In an Emergency
If approached by someone unknown or if feeling unsafe, students should head to a safe public space or contact a trusted adult. In any emergency, call 999 immediately.
Thank you for your ongoing support in keeping our school community safe!
