Health and Social Care

BTEC National Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification in Health and Social Care (Extended Certificate)

Entry Requirements: 5 GCSEs at grade 4 in English.

Is this course for me?

This course allows you to engage in a broad investigation of various aspects of the health and social care sector. Working in the health and social care sector can be both rewarding and fulfilling, as you could find yourself providing support to people at the best and worst times of their lives.

There are two mandatory examined units and one mandatory internally assessed unit. Students will select a further optional unit from the four available. The internally assessed units give students the opportunity to engage in applied knowledge and understanding tasks to develop their health and social care knowledge. The units that you have to study are:

  • Unit 1: Human lifespan development
  • Unit 2: Human Biology and Health
  • Unit 3: Principles of Health and Social Care Practice
  • Plus one additional coursework unit (Unit 4, 5, 6, or 7)

Where does it lead?

Many of our students have gone onto study Health and Social Care at university and it is an excellent starting point for those who wish to continue to study Health and Social Care at University or within a care setting.  If you are looking to pursue a career in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, midwifery or other health and social care roles, then this is the ideal course for you.  This course is also ideal for gaining employment in the health and social care sector as a care assistant with no additional qualifications.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the 2 year course. In Year 12, you will sit an external exam (Unit 1) and complete coursework (Unit 3). In Year 13, you will sit an external exam (Unit 2) and complete coursework (unit to be decided).  You will sit examinations in January of Year 12, and in January of Year 13. You will also get the opportunity to resit both Unit 1 & 2 exams.
